George M. Marcus is the Co-Founder and Chairman of the Marcus & Millichap Company. Founded in 1971, MMC is the parent company of a diversified family of real estate service, investment, and development firms. Included in the Marcus & Millichap family of companies are Pacific Urban Investors, SummerHill Homes, SummerHill Apartment Communities, and Meridian Property Company. Another affiliated company is MMC Technology Ventures (formerly Marcus & Millichap Venture Partners), which invests in real estate technology companies. Mr. Marcus is also the Founder and Chairman of Essex Property Trust (ESS) and Marcus & Millichap, Inc. (MMI), both publicly traded companies. ESS is a best-in-class Real Estate Investment Trust, a leader, and a pathfinder in the industry. MMI went public in October of 2013 and is a leading firm specializing in commercial real estate sales, financing, research, and advisory services, with more than 80 offices throughout the United States and Canada.
Mr. Marcus’ professional memberships include the University of California Berkeley Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics, Real Estate Roundtable, and Urban Land Institute, as well as numerous other professional and community organizations. These include International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), United Religions Initiative (URI), and Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST). He also sits on the Board of Directors of the UCSF Foundation, is an Emeritus Board Member of the Corporation of Fine Arts Museums (COFAM) where he served on the development committee that built the de Young Museum in San Francisco and is a Regent Emeritus of the University of California. Furthermore, he was one of the founders of Greater Bay Bancorp and sat on its Board of Directors until Wells Fargo acquired it.
Mr. Marcus graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from San Francisco State University in 1965. He was honored as Alumnus of the Millennium in 1999 and received his honorary doctorate in 2011. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School President’s Management Program and the Georgetown University Leadership Program.
